Choosing the right flooring for your Home

Wood flooring is a product that we know as being both classic and incredibly durable. This is one of the most sought-after flooring materials because of the way that it manages to highlight and complement any room. Designers love wood flooring because of the way that it can be used with almost any type of interior décor. The only problem is that there are so many different varieties of woods available. It can be difficult to know what will work in your home, and the types of flooring that you’ll need to last in certain areas. If you’ve ever pulled back the carpet in an extremely old house, then you may have encountered woods like pine.

Pine was often a go-to product for older homes, and can end up being a problem due to its soft characteristics. Trying to refinish certain types of pine can end up causing damage to the floor, and requires immediate replacing. This is why it’s important to ask a professional to come in and evaluate any flooring that you have. They can tell you whether or not you need to completely replace the floors, or if they can be salvaged. Even if you have your heart set on keeping the original flooring, you’ll still need the help of professionals. Trying to sand and refinish antique wood flooring can be a daunting task at best. At worst, you can end up spending hundreds of dollars only to still have to replace all of the flooring.

Then, you’ll need to choose what type of wood flooring you really want. This is two parts functionality, and one part interior design. There is a huge variety of wood flooring in London that can completely transform your home. It comes in all shapes, colours, and sizes, and choosing is more difficult than most people think. Consider some of these products for your chosen designs:

Mid-Century Modern

This is a design that centres on the interiors of homes in the 50’s and 60’s. Many of the wood floors were of a more traditional style. They were often deeply coloured in golden brown hues, and very complex. They involved woods like walnut, and other hardwoods that could stand up to the wear and tear of older and heavier furniture. The planks are average sized, and have a variety of different tones included in just one area.

Modern

Modern designs are focused on clean lines and very clear spaces. You want wood flooring that will provide this wide-open feeling, and that won’t contrast with lighter colours. Stick with wood that’s been treated to look lighter and in more natural tones. Thinner planks can work to add depth to a room that’s larger, but make sure that the planks are clean and uniformed in appearance.

Traditional

This goes back to the designs of the turn of the 19th century. It’s often considerate of classic homes that have been standing for several centuries. Look for darker woods that have wider planks. Hardwoods will be perfect, and they need to have a weathered look appropriate for the era. Even engineered flooring can fit the bill when you buy carefully from professional companies.

Country Classic

The country classic design seeks out décor that is more natural. This includes the types and tones of the wood flooring. While engineered flooring may be better for modern designs, Country classic really does require something more natural. Look for solid wood flooring in earthier tones. These will be lighter, but not closer to natural colours. Consider a medium brown that can reflect the sunshine in a room centred around the beauty of nature.
